Union College Schenectady NY

New York City, New York, United States
For more than two centuries, Union College has been defining—and continually redefining—what it means to provide a liberal arts education. Since 1795, we've been challenging convention, blurring boundaries and shaking up traditional thinking.

About

History

Founded in 1795 as the first planned campus in the United States, Union College is a highly selective, private, residential, liberal arts college with engineering that is consistently ranked among the nation's top colleges. Set on 100 acres in downtown Schenectady, N.Y., including eight acres of formal gardens and woodland known as Jackson's Garden, Union is within easy reach.

Education

Union College, founded in 1795, is a scholarly community dedicated to shaping the future and understanding the past. Faculty, staff, and administrators welcome diverse and talented students into our community, work closely with them to provide a broad and deep education, and guide them in finding and cultivating their passions. We do this with a wide range of disciplines and interdisciplinary programs in the liberal arts and engineering, as well as academic, athletic, cultural, and social activities, including opportunities to study abroad and to participate in undergraduate research and community service.

Housing services

As a residential college, Union offers many places and spaces to hang your hat (or cap, handbag, book bag, laundry bag or iPod). Some students live in the Minervas; others choose residence halls, fraternity or sorority residences or theme houses, or College Park Hall, a spacious, renovated hotel (with a bathroom in every room). All are just steps away from everything you'll need on campus—classrooms, labs, library, Reamer Campus Center, the Yulman Theater, studios, fitness center, dining halls and athletic fields.

Library services

Schaffer Library is a teaching library. We provide access to information resources that support the educational mission of Union College and we teach the critical and analytical skills necessary for the intelligent use of those resources.

ICT services

Union College has partnered with Apogee to provide high-speed internet access through the residential network with 24/7 customer support. Union College and Apogee are committed to providing students with state of the art wireless and wired access. Residents receive 10 Mbps download speed and the ability to connect four additional devices.

Medical services

The Health Center is located on the lower level of the Wicker Wellness Center, and plays a key role in helping students maintain a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle here at Union.

Student Life

Campus life

Connect socially, locally and globally to broaden your thinking. Engage in community outreach and meaningful volunteer work. Lead an organization or club, or start your own. Experiences like these are what make Union students stand out to prospective employers and develop the kinds of leadership skills that create great careers, and great lives.

Sports facilities

A significant number of students play varsity sports here at Union: 600. That’s more than a quarter, and I’m sure other liberal arts colleges see similar numbers. This level of participation would be unheard-of at larger schools, where only a minute percentage of students have the opportunity to play top-tier sports. That’s not to say our teams aren’t competitive – they definitely are. And the high number of students immersed in a rigorous daily athletic regimen creates a certain culture.

Student clubs

Some of the Organisations available are:

  • Association of Humanists, Agnostics and Atheists
  • AUM Hindu Association
  • Buddhist Student Association
  • Campus Protestant Ministry
