UCL was established in 1826 to open up education in England for the first time to students of any race, class or religion. UCL was also the first university to welcome female students on equal terms with men. Academic excellence and conducting research that addresses real-world problems inform our ethos to this day.

In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, 62% of UCLs submissions were ranked at the highest grades of 4* (of world-leading quality), or 3* (internationally excellent), placing it third in the UK(RAE 2008 results).UCL attracts the second highest number of academic citations in the UK showing the high esteem and relevance of the institutions research (QS 2011).All of UCLs research, subject to permissions, is placed in Discovery UCLs online repository, available to everyone.


  • UCL graduates are sought after by top employers in the world. UCL was ranked 4th in the UK in The Guardian University Guide (2013) for employment prospects.
  • The UCL Careers Office has a dedicated team to help students prepare for and secure work. As well as having expertise in the UK job market the Careers Office has specialists to help students find appropriate employment internationally.

The division has general responsibility for the following:

  • admissions (course publicity, schools liaison, applications, enquiries and qualifications)

  • Student complaints and disciplinary services

  • provision of information (for internal and external use)
  • assessment and charging of fees
  • liaison with the University of London, secondary schools and various other outside bodies

Library services

The Special Collections are a rich source of manuscripts, archives and rare books. They also have a remote store in Wickford, Essex, which sends requested material to the libraries on a daily basis.

Medical services

It is important to remember to look after yourself when you are in the UK and to find out how to obtain medical treatment. The National Health Service (NHS) is the healthcare system in the UK and is primarily funded through general taxation rather than requiring insurance payments. Some NHS services are free at the point of delivery, others you need to pay for.

Campus life

UCL continues its remarkable success in attracting funding. In 2011 UCL received the third highest allocation of Research Council UK funding and the third highest allocation of European Research Council starting grants.The UCL campus in Bloomsbury, central London, is surrounded by the greatest concentration of libraries, museums, and archives in Europe. You will be within walking distance from internationally renowned resources, such as the British Library. UCL's strong links with industrial and professional bodies based in the capital provide our students with great opportunities for career development.

Sports facilities

Whatever you love to do, London spoils you for choice. Why don't you try:

  • Premier League football, cricket at the Oval or Lord's, rugby at Twickenham, the London Marathon (run every April), tennis at Wimbledon;
  • one of London's many green spaces, from local parks and gardens to world-famous sites including: Regent's Park, Hyde Park or Kew Gardens.

Student clubs

There is a Postgraduate Association within the UCL Students Union, which represents graduate students both on UCL committees and in the Students Union.


In 2005, UCL was granted the power to award its own degrees, and currently offers its students the choice between a UCL or a University of London degree.
