University of Kiel

Kiel, Germany
The University of Kiel (German Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, CAU) is a university in the city of Kiel, Germany. It was founded in 1665 as the Academia Holsatorum Chiloniensis by Christian Albert, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp and has approximately 23,000 students today.

When Herzog Christian-Albrecht von Holstein-Gottorf decided to found a university in 1665, the devastating Thirty Years' War was not long over. The university to which the duke gave his name was the a response to his country's need for well-educated young men able to serve the state. 140 students enrolled in the faculties of Theology, Law, Medicine and Philosophy initially established.

As a state institution, Kiel University has a special responsibility: It offers students from Schleswig-Holstein a broad range of subjects so they can study in state. Kiel University also offers a clearly structured scientific profile that attracts students from all over Germany and the world. Contributing to this are the bachelor and master programs, which are available in almost all disciplines. They are designed to make it easier for international students to get their degrees accepted.

The main focus of the research group „Genetics & Bioinformatics“ is on the identification and basic molecular characterization of genetic susceptibility loci. We employ genome-wide association studies (GWAS) as the main tool to identify genetic susceptibility loci in complex inflammatory diseases. Sample preparation, data generation and analysis all take place in-house, which implies that we are also developing protocols and management systems for these tasks.
