University of Thessaly

The University of Thessaly is a university in Thessaly, Greece, founded in 1984. The university is based in Volos, but operates campuses in Larissa, Trikala and Karditsa. The university comprises four schools—Humanities, Engineering, Agricultural Sciences and Health Sciences—and has three independent departments focusing on Physical Education and Sports Science, Veterinary Medicine and Economics.



The University of Thessaly was founded in 1984 and has elected the first Rectorate Board in 1998. Its administrative and academic centre is in the city of Volos. In order to serve the needs of the region of Thessaly, its first Departments were based on agricultural, educational and technological sciences.

The Career Office of the University of Thessaly is mainly associated with the effective transition of its graduates to the labour market.

The Career Office of the University of Thessaly was established in 1997, in the framework of the Second Community Support Framework (Operational Programmes for Education and Initial Vocational Training) and it operates with similar standards with the relevant offices in other universities abroad. Dealing with problems related to labour market, jobs availability, entrepreneurship and student mobility, one of its main objective is to create a permanent link between the University and the productive community.

Student services

The job of the International Office is to facilitate the academic and educational mobility for students, teachers and administration staff. We provide information and assistance on studies, scholarships and application procedures regarding various exchange programmes and we are responsible for the contracts and cooperation with our partners universities abroad.

Housing services

Accommodation with a very small charge is provided to eligible ( according to financial criteria) students in the city of Volos, where there is a Student Residence Hall.

There is also an accommodation grant of 100 € per month for the undergraduate foreign students of countries outside EU. For the Greek students and also the students of countries members of EU there is an accommodation grant of 1000 € per year depending on academic and financial criteria.

Library services

The University of Thessaly Library aims at supporting and promoting its parent Institution's educational and research work. It offers its services to the University of Thessaly academic community members, as well as to the general public.

Medical services

The Laboratory of Psychology and Educational Applications of the Department of Special Education offers psychological support and help to all students who need it, in order to deal with their personal difficulties and concerns, and it also helps in developing skills on how to manage potential problems.

Student Life

Campus life

The “Pedion Areos” Campus (Athinon & Sekeri Str.) used by the Departments of the School of Engineering. The Campus includes the renovated buildings of the former Water Pump Manufacturing Paparrigas Factory (where the Departments of Architecture, Civil and Mechanical Engineering operate) and the new building of the Department of Planning and Regional Development, which is a modern construction with an impressive roof.

Sports facilities

The PEO aims at encouraging the students of the University of Thessaly to participate in Sport activities, to keep fit and strengthen body and soul through physical training and rivalry. It also aims at organizing several championships among the different Departments of the University and finally at participating in interuniversity sports events.
